Gdisk - The upcoming Alternative to Gparted?

The U**x/Linux Universe provides for each task more than one tool. To alter partitioning tables for instance it is not a big risk anymore. Is it really? And how about conventions for sizes? Gparted is the de facto standard under Linux, but there is also the Gdisk suite in the pipeline, and the Arch distribution installs it by default. Will it be the next top choice, will it displace Gparted? And for what reason do we need another partitioner? I asked Rod Smith, the inventor and maintainer of Gdisk for the CHIP Linux magazine 01/2015. Here's his unabrigded original wording.
